Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has constituted a high-level seven-member committee to draft the Constitution of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU) following ongoing student protests. The committee aims to engage with students and address their demands through dialogue and constructive engagement.
Background and Committee Formation
On 18 October 2026, JMI formed the committee comprising senior Deans and Professors, chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof Mazhar Asif, to interact with protesting students and examine issues related to student representation on campus. The committee reached out to students on 19 October and visited the protest site to initiate dialogue.
Engagement with Students
The committee requested lists of bona fide students and invited representative student groups for discussions at the Dean of Social Sciences office. On 20 October, student representatives met for two hours to voice grievances, followed by a formalising meeting at the Dean of Students’ Welfare office to draft minutes incorporating student suggestions. However, students did not agree to sign the final minutes.
Deliberations and Objectives
A larger meeting involving all committee members, Deans, academic and administrative officers convened to deliberate recommendations and find ways to restore campus peace and normalcy.
Mandate of the Constitution Drafting Committee
The committee’s tasks include examining the circumstances of JMISU’s dissolution in 2006, relevant court rulings, recommendations from the Lyngdoh Committee (2007), and the current legal and institutional framework. The committee will study applicable ordinances and statutes of JMI and national guidelines for student bodies and union elections.
JMI’s Commitment
JMI reiterates its commitment to safeguarding students’ rights, upholding democratic values, restoring peace, and protecting the university’s academic environment and reputation nationally and internationally.
