Nagaland University organised a programme on 4 November 2026 at Rajiv Gandhi Park, Lumami as part of the BRICS Sustainable Lifestyle Week 2026, promoting the theme “Adopt Sustainable Food Systems.” The week-long observance runs from 1 to 7 November 2026, focusing on environmental responsibility and sustainability aligned with India’s BRICS Chairship for the year.
Promoting Traditional Diets and Composting
Dr Lobeno Mozhui, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology, emphasized the connection between traditional diets, agricultural health, and environmental sustainability. She highlighted the promotion of nutrient-rich local dishes like Galho, a traditional rice and vegetable preparation, while cautioning against over-reliance on commercial food products.
She also stressed the importance of viewing kitchen waste as a valuable bio-resource. Composting organic waste can enrich soil and help restore local ecosystems, turning food scraps into a beneficial resource rather than rubbish.
Programme Overview and University Engagement
Peter Ki, PRO of Nagaland University, connected India’s 2026 BRICS Chairship theme of “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability” with the Sustainable Lifestyle Week initiative. The week encourages individuals and communities to take practical steps for environmental resilience, including youth participation through the Mission LiFE pledge available online from 1 to 7 November.
Dr Lirikum from the Department of Zoology presented composting as an effective kitchen-based method to convert organic waste into nutrient-rich soil. He encouraged especially hostel residents to recycle their food waste instead of discarding it, reducing reliance on chemical fertilisers, and to use compost for growing plants and vegetables.

Composting helps microbes break down organic matter into soil enriched with essential macronutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK), while supporting a healthy soil structure. It also mitigates greenhouse gas emissions by diverting food waste from landfills, reducing methane release, a potent contributor to global warming.
Key composting practices include ensuring aeration in containers to avoid methane generation, turning the compost pile every four to five days to maintain airflow, shredding kitchen scraps for faster decomposition, and monitoring pH levels to prevent excessive acidity that can harm microbial activity.
BRICS Sustainable Lifestyle Week Themes and Context
