Banaras Hindu University (BHU) Krishi Vigyan Kendra located in the southern campus at Barkachha has started selling improved seed varieties of mustard, pea, and lentil to encourage farmers in Mirzapur to adopt advanced farming techniques for the Rabi season.
Advanced Seed Varieties Available
According to Prof. Shriram Singh, Chairman of the Agricultural Science Centre, the available mustard seed varieties include Brujraj, Surekha, and RH-1424. These mature in about 125 to 130 days with an average yield of 10 to 12 quintals per acre under suitable conditions and recommended scientific practices.
Best Practices for Good Yield
Prof. Singh emphasized timely sowing, seed treatment, row-wise planting, and balanced fertilizer use as essential for good mustard production. He recommended applying 25 to 30 kilograms of sulfur per hectare and advised farmers to conduct soil testing and follow local agricultural recommendations to meet crop nutritional needs effectively.

The centre also offers seed varieties of pea such as IPFD 13-2, IPFD 19-1, and IPFD 19-3, along with lentil variety IPL 315 for sale. Inclusion of leguminous and oilseed crops like these in farming can provide profitable alternatives to farmers.
Benefits of Crop Diversification
Prof. Shriram Singh explained that incorporating leguminous and oilseed crops in crop rotations helps maintain soil fertility through biological nitrogen fixation. Crop diversification also lowers farming risks and enhances efficient use of available resources.
Farmer Support
Farmers are encouraged to visit the Krishi Vigyan Kendra Barkachha on any working day for information and guidance on seeds, sowing methods, fertilizer management, and crop care.
