Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) university has announced the resumption of offline classes and examinations from 2 November 2026. This decision follows a period of student protests demanding the revival of an elected students’ union, which has been inactive since 2006.
Offline Classes and Examinations Resumption
The university will conduct all undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in offline mode as per department and faculty timetables. Scheduled examinations, including mid-semester and end-semester exams, will also be conducted exclusively offline. Attendance has been made mandatory for students, and university authorities have been tasked with making suitable arrangements for classrooms, seating, and invigilation.
Students’ Union Constitution Approval
JMI has set the deadline for the approval and implementation of the Students’ Union constitution as 15 May 2027. The students’ union elections will be conducted within six weeks of the start of the next academic session, approximately mid-July 2027. The university will release notifications for the elections based on the constitution in accordance with the recommendations and guidelines of the Lyngdoh Committee.

Following nearly three weeks of sustained student protests and hunger strikes by two students, the university revoked all ongoing show-cause notices, disciplinary actions, suspensions, rustications, and campus bans related to the agitation. Students were instructed to immediately call off the hunger strike and protest.
Background and Context
The protests centred around demands to revive the elected students’ union and concerns over conditions placed on election processes and constitution approval, including absence of a fixed timeline and requirements for public apologies for alleged defamatory statements during the protests. The university’s latest directive removes these issues by setting a clear deadline and unconditionally revoking penalties against protesting students.
