Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has ended a 20-year deadlock over student union elections, restoring democratic representation on campus after lengthy discussions between the administration and protesting students. The university announced that offline classes and examinations for all undergraduate and postgraduate programmes will recommence from 2 November 2026.
Background
The dispute over the student union at JMI lasted nearly two decades, with no elections held during this period due to successive administrations’ inaction. Protests by students in 2026 renewed demands for formal representation through elections.
Resolution Process
The administration conducted around eight meetings with protesting students, culminating in an order dated 29 October 2026 that restored the students’ union. Over 2,000 teachers and staff members welcomed this development at a thanksgiving programme held on 30 October, highlighting the administration’s commitment to dialogue, democracy, and a student-centric approach.

While celebrating the resolution, university staff also urged strict action against individuals responsible for campus vandalism and anti-national slogans. The staff condemned social media posts that created divisive narratives and expressed gratitude to the Union government, especially the Ministries of Education and Home Affairs, for their support during the discussions.
The university has called upon students to attend classes regularly and appear for offline mid-semester and end-semester examinations, marking a return to normal campus academic activities.
