The National Testing Agency (NTA) has commenced a major reform of its examination system by removing more than 50 staff members and initiating recruitment for 10 professional leadership positions. This initiative follows concerns over recent examination errors, including the announcement of a re-test for three subjects of the UGC-NET June 2026 exam.
Overview of Measures
Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi held a meeting with top education officials, including the NTA Director General, to review actions taken to enhance examination processes. As part of the overhaul, the ministry disclosed the removal of over 50 personnel from the agency.
The NTA has advertised key leadership roles such as Chief Technology Officer, Chief Finance Officer, Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), General Manager for Test Security, and General Manager for Research and Development and Psychometrics. Professionals from the private sector are also to be engaged in specialized domains like cybersecurity, psychometrics, and question-paper design.
Technology and Security Improvements
The Education Minister instructed strict adherence to established examination protocols. A comprehensive overhaul of the confidential operations (CONOPS), including the use of secluded rooms, air-gapped systems, and device deposit procedures, is being executed urgently.

The NTA has been directed to perform a thorough audit of all examination processes and submit a report detailing corrective actions. The measures come after the agency announced re-examinations for the English, Commerce, and Sociology papers of the UGC-NET June 2026, scheduled for 9 and 10 September 2026, due to multiple errors in the initial conduct.
The UGC-NET exam was conducted across 87 subjects from 22 to 30 June 2026 to award Junior Research Fellowship, determine Assistant Professor eligibility, and facilitate admission to PhD programmes.
