Every Central University admits PhD scholars under the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022. Seats are filled on the strength of a UGC NET/JRF qualification (CSIR NET or GATE where relevant) or through the university’s own entrance test, followed by an interview. The notices for each step appear here as the universities publish them.
The usual PhD admission steps
- The university publishes the PhD admission notice with subject-wise vacant seats and the last date.
- You apply online, usually on the university’s Samarth portal, in the NET/JRF category or the entrance test category.
- The university releases a shortlist and holds the entrance test (for candidates without NET) and the interview.
- The final selection list follows, then fee payment, document verification and coursework.
NET score and PhD admission
Since 2024, UGC NET results are declared in three categories: JRF with Assistant Professor and PhD admission, Assistant Professor with PhD admission, and PhD admission only. For NET based PhD admission, UGC gives 70 percent weightage to the NET score and 30 percent to the interview. A NET score obtained in the PhD-only category is valid for PhD admission for one year.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get PhD admission in a Central University without NET?
Yes, at most universities. Candidates without NET/JRF can take the university’s PhD entrance test where one is held, and those who qualify go on to the interview. Some universities now admit PhD scholars only through NET scores, so read the notice of the university you want.
What is the minimum qualification for PhD?
A master’s degree with at least 55 percent marks (5 percent relaxation for SC, ST, OBC non-creamy layer, differently-abled and EWS candidates), or a four-year bachelor’s degree with at least 75 percent marks, as per the UGC regulations. Universities can add subject-specific conditions.
How much is the JRF fellowship?
Rs. 37,000 per month for the first two years as JRF and Rs. 42,000 per month as SRF after that, plus HRA as per rules.
When do Central Universities open PhD admissions?
There is no single calendar. Many universities admit once a year, often between September and January, and some twice a year. The Open forms filter above always shows what is accepting applications today.
