North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) has invited applications for admission to PhD programs offered in various departments across its Shillong and Tura campuses for the academic session 2026-27. Interested candidates can apply online and must complete the application process by 30 November 2026.

PhD Programs Offered

Shillong Campus: Commerce, Economics, Journalism and Mass Communication, Library and Information Science, Tourism and Hotel Management, Adult and Continuing Education, Education, Anthropology, Environmental Studies, Geography, Geology, English, Hindi, Khasi, Linguistics, Philosophy, Biochemistry, Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, Botany, Zoology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, Folkloristics and Music, History, Law, Political Science, Sociology.

Tura Campus: Agri-Business Management, Food Technology, Management, Education, Forestry, Horticulture, Rural Development and Agricultural Production, English, Garo.

Eligibility

Candidates must have a minimum of 55% aggregate marks (or equivalent grade points) at Master’s Degree/ M.Phil level in the relevant subject from a recognized university or institution. Relaxation of 5% (to 50%) is allowed for SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer), EWS, differently-abled, and other categories as approved by UGC and the Academic Council.

For admission after a 4-year/8-semester Bachelor’s Degree, a minimum 75% aggregate marks (or equivalent grade) is required, with a 5% relaxation for reserved categories.

Some PhD programs such as Forestry, Agribusiness Management, Food Technology, Horticulture, Rural Development & Agricultural Production have specific eligibility criteria regarding degree specialization and minimum marks or grades.

Admission Procedure

  • Admission is through an entrance test conducted by the university consisting of 50% research methodology and 50% subject-specific syllabus.
  • Candidates scoring at least 50% in the entrance test qualify for the interview.
  • 5% relaxation in entrance test marks for reserved categories is applicable.
  • Selection is based on 70% weightage to entrance test and 30% to interview/viva-voce performance.
  • Candidates who qualify in national level tests receive 10 additional marks.

Application Fee

The application fee is Rs. 500 for general candidates and Rs. 250 for SC/ST candidates. Payment must be made online through UPI, debit card, credit card, or net banking. The fee is non-refundable.
