Pondicherry had 8,441 students in its own UG and PG programmes in 2023-24, and 1,779 PhD scholars. 47% of the UG and PG students are women. 71% come from outside Puducherry, including 13 from other countries. Students of affiliated or constituent colleges that report separately are not included.

4,276 students are from SC, ST or OBC categories and 1,587 are economically backward (69% of all UG and PG students together). Of these 5,863 students, 1,815 had their full tuition fee paid by the central or state government, 2,601 by the university and 53 by private bodies.

Faculty
Pondicherry's NIRF return lists 454 faculty members working at the university now, about 23 students per faculty member (counting PhD students). 96% of them hold a PhD. 34% are women. The median teacher has 20 years of experience.
