DU is considering an entrance test for one-year master's admissions starting in the 2027-28 academic session to address capacity and fairness concerns.

Delhi University (DU) informed the Delhi High Court on 3 November 2026 that it is considering implementing an entrance test for admissions to its one-year postgraduate (PG) programme starting from the 2027-28 academic session.

The one-year master’s programme was introduced in 2026-27 for students completing four-year undergraduate degrees under the National Education Policy framework. Unlike the two-year PG course, which admits students through CUET-PG, the one-year PG admissions in 2026-27 were conducted without an entrance exam. Admissions followed a priority order based on degree type and CGPA, leading to complaints alleging discrimination.

Several students from the first batch challenged the admission criteria as discriminatory in petitions to the Delhi High Court.

DU reported that the introduction of the one-year PG programme added 6,147 seats to its capacity, straining infrastructure, accommodation, and teaching resources. It currently faces maximum capacity issues with over 15,000 combined seats in one-year and two-year PG programmes.

To address student grievances and capacity challenges, DU is proposing to base future one-year PG admissions solely on an entrance test starting 2027-28 and will assess resources to decide seat numbers for both PG programmes.
